ClearIntent™ Sustainable Portfolio

Together, we can do beautiful things.

Our Clear Intent™ Portfolio: More ways to say yes to sustainability.

You’ll find dozens of ways to improve the sustainability of your labels in our Clear Intent Portfolio—an ever-growing selection of sustainability-oriented products. Choose from among hundreds of facestocks, adhesives and other solutions made with fewer inputs; certified, renewable materials; and performance-enhancing innovations. No matter what you need - Avery Dennison makes your dollars work hard for you and the planet. In all, it’s an abundance of solutions that help you make a big impact on the shelf, not on the environment.

Our Clear Intent Portfolio of products and services promotes sustainability in one or more of these ways:

Responsibly source.

Choose from a broad range of label options made with paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council or film made from renewable resources.

Consume less material by using thinner labels.

Make your packaging more recyclable or incorporate more recycled content. Tap into our network of recyclers for matrix and liner waste.

Product Portfolios:

Some examples from our Clear Intent Portfolio:

A filmic facestock made from sugarcane? Sweet.

Our bio-based PE film is made largely from sugarcane-based ethylene—a renewable resource. The resin we use to make it is certified by the nonprofit organization Bonsucro® as meeting stringent standards for its impact on people and the environment. Available in white and clear, bio-based PE can easily be exchanged for fossil-based PE, without major adjustments to your converting process.

Leading with FSC®.

Our Clear Intent Portfolio includes hundreds of self-adhesive products made with paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), indicating that the paper they’re made from comes from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits. Altogether, about half of the face paper and liner paper we offer is FSC certified, with more to come. Best of all, we offer our FSC-certified products at the same cost as our non-FSC products, so you don’t have to pay more to do the right thing.

Solutions for recycling liners.

Your biggest label-related sustainability challenge might come down to one question: What do we do with all that leftover liner and matrix?

We’ve got solutions. Across the globe, we’re building a growing network of recyclers that turn label waste into something new. Our ultimate vision? A closed-loop system where used label liners become feedstock for new ones.

Promoting sustainability beyond our walls.

Committed as we are to sustainability in our operations, our greater aim is to create lasting change in systems and supply chains industrywide—in part by working closely with customers like you. Here are just some of the ways we’re using our influence as the world’s leading label manufacturer to promote sustainability:
  • As a member of the Association of Plastic Recyclers’ (APR) Board of Directors, Technical Committee and Communications Committee, we recently helped APR revise their design guidelines for recyclable plastic.
  • We’re working with Rainforest Alliance and several other companies to encourage owners of woodlands in the U.S.’s south and central Appalachia region to adopt FSC practices.
  • We’re a visible and vocal member of Sustainable Brands, where we provide insight in committee work and are a resource for companies pursuing sustainability.
  • Through the Avery Dennison Foundation, we provide funding and technical support for a Rainforest Alliance project seeking to increase FSC acreage in Honduras, as well as providing sustainable livelihoods for timber workers in that country
  • We chair the Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute’s (TLMI) five Environmental Committees, which bring together experts from TLMI member companies and serve as a reliable source for solutions in a wide range of environmental topics.
  • Our former CEO took part in the Sustainable Innovation Forum during the UN climate talks in Paris in 2015, the same year we signed the White House’s American Business Act on Climate Pledge, calling for a strong outcome at the Paris talks.
  • We serve on the Board of FINAT in Europe, and have co-sponsored the 2016 Matrix and Liner Recycling Project.
